What is Ayurveda yoga or Ayurvedic yoga? Yesterday I spent the whole day recovering from a yoga class that brought me totally out of balance. The start was good and promising. The vibrant teacher wanted to focus on the spirit, which I love. She took the time to let us settle in, connecting with the star/light inside of us. But soon I found myself doing quick vinyasa’s over and over again, going from plank into worriors for a long period of time and I didn’t get a chance to ground myself. The more excited the teacher became, the louder her voice and cue’s : ‘You have to work hard, to feel the light!’
How I felt lost. My spirit was drifting, I couldn’t ground and I totally lost myself. Tired and with a headache I returned home.
This wasn’t Ayurvedic yoga, at least not for me. It could have been, if I would have been a strong kapha type. In need of fire and motivation to move in order to release. But as a predominant vata type it made my nervous system go nuts.
Probably the pitta types liked the class- as it feeds their desire to do more and go all the way.- But a release after exhausting yourself is not the same as feeling relaxed and balanced after a cooling and surrendering practice.
The wisdom of Ayurveda teaches us which yoga practice suits you best, considering the time of day, season and climate in which you practice. And considering your mental state, spiritual nature (gunas) and constitution(body and personality – dosha).
Ayurvedic/Ayurveda yoga is an amazing journey of self inquiry and healing. A chance to meet yourself, your true nature of spirit.
Next time you leave your yoga class, ask yourself: How do I feel? Did I meet myself? Or did I meet my ego? When you leave the class feeling balanced, relaxed and invigorated at the same time, you are on your way for a healthier and happier life.
Bring consciousness into your practice. If your teacher doesn’t do that, do it yourself, or try another class. Yoga is not a workout. Its a profound system for healing and self inquiry. Ayurveda will learn you more about which energies play a role in your constitution (body/personality). Knowing this vehicle- that you were born with to life your karma- will prevent you from disease and bring inner peace.
